As a mathematics and statistics student, my Personal Learning Network (PLN) includes professors, classmates, tutors, textbooks, course websites, YouTube channels, and online communities. A PLN is not simply a group of people I know. It is a learning network that I intentionally build, maintain, and activate when I need information, feedback, or academic support (Rajagopal et al., 2012).

My PLN is especially important because mathematics and statistics require both independent practice and communication with others. For example, I may ask a classmate to explain a difficult calculus step, watch a video about regression analysis, or compare different methods for solving a probability problem. Strong connections, such as professors and close classmates, can provide detailed explanations and feedback. Weaker connections, such as online professionals and forum users, may introduce new ideas, software, learning resources, and career opportunities. Both strong and weak connections can contribute to learning in different ways (Rajagopal et al., 2012).

My digital identity also affects how I participate in my PLN. My personal digital identity may include my hobbies, opinions, and casual communication, while my professional identity should demonstrate accuracy, responsibility, and academic honesty. As a mathematics and statistics student, I may eventually share data visualizations, R or Python projects, and statistical analyses online. These materials could show my knowledge and technical skills to classmates, instructors, and future employers.

However, I cannot completely control my digital identity. I can control my profile, comments, and uploaded work, but I cannot fully control screenshots, tags, search results, or other people’s interpretations of my content. Stoller explains that people should think carefully about how their online activities contribute to their digital identity (Stoller, 2016). Social media is also a space where people create communities, express identities, and develop a sense of belonging (Spracklen, 2015).

Therefore, I want to develop a digital identity that is both authentic and professional. Before sharing mathematical or statistical information, I should check my calculations, acknowledge my sources, protect private data, and communicate respectfully. A well-managed PLN can support my lifelong learning, while a responsible digital identity can demonstrate my reliability as a future mathematics and statistics professional.
